Richmond Co. schedules debris clean-up volunteer day

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Richmond County will hold a Volunteer Service Day on March 8th, 2014 to assist those still in need of debris removal. The volunteer groups: GA Southern Baptist, Samaritan's Purse, and Team Rubicon have come in and assisted so many in our community; however, there are so many more that need help. As these groups and their volunteers start to head back home, it's time for us to join the efforts and help them complete the remaining requests for help!

We encourage you to go out in your neighborhood and see if your neighbors need help getting debris to the road. If your help isn't needed in your neighborhood, come out to Pine View Baptist Church at 119 Pleasant Home Road at 7:30 AM, meet the Samaritan's Purse team and head out with one of their crews. Please practice safety when you're working with chainsaws and heavy equipment, do not take on more than you can handle on your own.

Volunteers should:

  • wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty,
  • bring work gloves if you have them,
  • work boots are preferred but you can wear tennis shoes, or another form of comfortable closed toe shoes,
  • bring a bottle of water and bag lunch,
  • bring a camera/cell phone (all volunteers are encouraged to submit pictures to EMA).

The volunteer day will last until 4:30 PM. If you can't stay the whole day, even an hour of your time is a great help to this cleanup effort.

While we have scheduled this volunteer work day for Saturday, we know that some can't help this weekend. We encourage you to help anytime Monday-Saturday before March 15th, 2014. Samaritan's Purse responds with a small group of volunteers and they rely on the people in the local community to join their efforts. If you are able to donate a few hours during this week, please come out and help!

If you have a group that will be volunteering or you want to join a group, we encourage everyone to help! Take pictures of your group working and email them to dlucas@augustaga.gov with the number of people on your team and the areas you assisted. We will recognize the groups and individuals that helped this day.

For questions, email dlucas@augustaga.gov or call (706)821-1155.
