SAVANNAH RIVER SITE, SC (WFXG) - The proposed fiscal 2015 budget by President Barack Obama has put the brakes on the mixed-oxide fuel project at the Savannah River Site.
Pres. Obama's budget, sent to Congress on Tuesday, put the plans on "cold standby" while officials evaluate alternative ways to dispose on plutonium.
The MOX project, as it's called, would turn weapons-grade plutonium into fuel for commercial nuclear reactors.
Construction began on the project in 2007, is reported to be $3 billion over budget, and more than three years behind its 2016 completion deadline.
