AIKEN, SC (WFXG) - The Bi-Lo grocery store located at 1149 York St. in Aiken will close in July.
It is one of 13 Bi-Lo Holdings grocery stores that will close over the next several months, according to a press release from the company. The Aiken store will shut its doors on July 12.
The 13 stores across Georgia, Florida and South Carolina will begin closing on March 22 and end with the Aiken store's closing in July.
The decision to close the stores was part of Bi-Lo Holdings' acquisition of the Sweetbay, Harveys and Reid's supermarket chains from Delhaize America.
The Federal Trade Commission agreed to approve the transaction as long as Bi-Lo Holdings agreed to divest - or close- some stores and allow Delhaize Group to retain two stores and covert them to the Food Lion banner.
"Given the number of stores we are acquiring, we anticipated that we may be asked by the Federal Trade Commission to divest some stores to close the deal," said R. Randall Onstead, president and CEO of Bi-Lo Holdings. "In addition, with the close proximity of some of the Bi-Lo Holdings and Delhaize stores, we also knew that we would have to close a few stores as part of the acquisition."
Eight of the 13 stores that will close in the three-state area are Sweetbay, Harveys or Reid's stores. The others are Winn-Dixie or Bi-Lo stores already owned by Bi-Lo Holdings.
Onstead said employees at the closing stores will have the opportunity to apply for positions at nearby stores.
