PAKISTAN (FOX) - Amid a battle between Pakistan's Air Force and Taliban militants, hundreds of families are fleeing the Pakistan and Afghanistan border.

Nearly 30 insurgents are dead in the latest airstrikes, according to Pakistani officials.

Some are praising the Pakistani government for standing up and fighting back.

"In a way, they were trying to legitimize themselves, gain respectability and acceptability in the society, which was totally a very intelligent approach on their part, but the government could not allow this to continue," said retired Gen. Talat Masood. "So, I think the government made a correct decision, although they should have come much earlier. But nonetheless, better late than never."

He added that the fighting would displace a lot of people who will need help. "We have to take care of them," he said. "That's a very major problem for the government. At the same time, there will be a lot of misery and suffering for the people who are displaced."

Pakistan's prime minister has long favored peace talks over military action, but has faced pressure to retaliate against the Taliban.

Tens of thousands of Pakistanis have died over the last decade in the Taliban's war against Pakistan.
