Fort Gordon celebrates Black History Month

FORT GORDON, GA (WFXG) -

Fort Gordon celebrated Black History Month with a special presentation this afternoon.

The event theme this year was "Civil Rights in America" and featured guest speaker Melissa Waddy-Thibodeaux.

Grovetown Elementary School fourth and fifth graders also performed two songs at the event.

People that attended said events like these remind us just how far we've come as a nation.

"Celebrations like this are extremely important in that, how far we've come since the 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s in our country. And just to celebrate equality for all Americans and that's equality for all races," says Captain Michael Quigg II.

Waddy-Thibodeaux performed as important African American women in history including Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks.
