GRU officer involved in shooting at student housing

Georgia Regents University (WFXG) - A GRU officer was involved in a shooting early Saturday morning, and the suspect is now being charged with aggravated assault on police, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

GRU police responded to a call about loud music at the University Grove Apartments.

Officers asked 19-year-old Donte Stewart to identify himself when he ran from the apartment and got in his car, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

GRU officer Wesley Martin attempted to stop Stewart by blocking the exit lane of the apartment complex.

Stewart sped up the car and tried to hit Officer Martin, which is when Martin open fired several times, according to the sheriff's office. The suspect was injured but not shot.

Stewart's car eventually hit a tree and he exited the car and began running. He was eventually caught on Tindon Street at Damascus Road.

Stewart is a member of the U.S. Armed Forces and was stationed at Fort Gordon.

Martin has been placed on paid administrative leave.
