A statement from Cincinnati Country Day School official
UNION TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -
Union Township investigators have arrested the suspect involved in a Friday evening hit-and-run that killed a Cincinnati Country Day School faculty member.
Police say Todd Shaw, 51, fatally struck bicyclist Fredrick Carey on Round Bottom Road and then fled the area. Authorities say that alcohol was a factor in the hit-and-run.
Investigators were searching for a vehicle described as a ‘bright yellow van' before locating it in the 4500 block of Dameron Lane. Authorities say they found Shaw a short time later after canvassing the area and checking establishments that sell alcohol.
Shaw is currently incarcerated in the Clermont County Jail where he is charged with Aggravated Vehicular Homicide and Leaving the Scene.
According to court documents obtained by FOX19, Shaw has
three prior charges for driving under the influence and one for failing to stop after an injury
Carey was operating his bicycle in a legal manner, according to authorities.
"The Country Day Community is shocked and saddened by the loss of Fred Carey," said a statement from Robert Macrae, Cincinnati Country Day's Head of School. Carey was a teacher, the Dean of Students, and an Outdoor Club faculty advisor. Macrae described him as a "very popular English teacher."
A ‘Ghost Bike' is planned for March 1 in memory of Carey, according to a joint statement from the Cincinnati Cycle Club and Queen City Bike organization, along with Ohio Bike Lawyer Steve Magas.
Ghost Bikes are a memorial practiced in the cycling community intended to honor bicyclists who are killed or hit on the streets. The cycle clubs says they are "quiet statements in support of cyclists' right to safe travel."
