Health department suspects norovirus at Colerain facility

Posted: Updated:
COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -

On Thursday morning, Hamilton County health officials were notified by Atria Northgate Park, an assisted-living facility in Colerain Township, that a number of their residents were ill and they complained of symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting.

Currently,  there are 28 sickened (27 residents and one staff member). There are about 140 residents at the facility.

County epidemiologists highly suspect norovirus, a highly contagious viral infection, common on cruise ships and places with community activities under one roof.

The county informed the facility how to treat it, how to disinfect common areas and food handling areas. Health department officials are investigating the source of the outbreak.

The facility is being disinfected.

The health department recommended affected patients be removed from general population.

There is always a chance of complications, especially with the elderly, very young or those with compromised immune systems.

Health officials say it typically takes 24 hours to 48 hours for virus to run its course.
