PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Fire badly damaged one house while firefighters were able to save another in a Phoenix neighborhood early Friday morning.

Fire Capt. Patrick O'Neill said a woman in her 60s was able to get out of the house in the area of Northern and Seventh avenues unharmed.

Two cars were destroyed in the carport before the flames spread to the attic and burned through the roof, O'Neill said.

A neighboring house was initially in danger of catching fire, but firefighters were able to keep the fire at bay and the house suffered only some paint damage on the eaves from the radiant heat.

The living room, kitchen, dining room and bedrooms suffered smoke damage and the residents will have to live elsewhere until repairs are made, O'Neill said.

He said crews had to cut several holes in the attic space of the damaged home to fight and monitor the fire.

O'Neill said the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
