ADOC: 10 inmates hurt in fight at Arizona prison

BUCKEYE, AZ (CBS5) -

An Arizona prisons official said 10 inmates were taken to a hospital, including one in critical condition, after a fight in a unit of the Lewis prison in Buckeye late Thursday afternoon.

Arizona Department of Corrections spokesman Doug Nick said fewer than 100 inmates were involved in the fight that he said was racially motivated.

Nick said the fight involved inmates in three housing units of the Stiner Unit when "racial tensions came to a head" about 4:15 p.m.

The situation was quickly brought under control when the officers' training "kicked in," Nick said.

No ADOC staff or officers were hurt in the melee, Nick said.

Nick said all units at the medium security prison were on lockdown and that the Stiner Unit would stay on lockdown through the weekend.

ADOC is investigating.
