(CNN) - More than 30,000 people have signed a petition calling on lawmakers in Congress to give up their paychecks if they're not planning to do any more work this year.

The petition was started by progressive group Move On after some congressional GOP leaders were quoted in media stories saying they had no plans to vote for important legislation until after November mid-term elections.

The group said, over the past 48 hours, the petition has racked up thousands of signatures.

The petition comes as national polls show Congress' approval ratings are in the low to mid teens, just above all time lows.
