Lions Club expecting to feed thousands at annual pancake festival

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The Lions Club Annual Pancake Festival kicks off this weekend and organizers say they are preparing to feed more people than they have ever fed before.

The breakfast is the largest pancake festival in the world. Last year, the Lions Club fed about 18,000 people. This year, co-chair Lori Martin says they want to feed more.

"You know, it's something that our community has been a part of for 60 plus years. Families have come out every single year, they look forward to doing that," Martin said.

Martin is co-chairing the event alongside Mike Masengale. They, along with more than 850 volunteers, will be serving up pancakes and all the sides this year.

"Really, it's a festival - it's an all day festival. It starts at 7 in the morning and ends at 8 in the night. No matter what time you come during the day, there is some kind of activity for you and your family," Masengale said.

For the thousands of people expected to attend, there will be face painting, live music and entertainment.

Feeding that many people isn't easy. It takes more than 5,500 pounds of pancake mix, 36,000 ounces of syrup, 57,000 links of sausage, 18,000 containers of orange juice and 21,000 containers of milk.

This year, they will be serving up an extra treat: bacon.

This is an all-you-can-eat experience, with a goal of raising money for area non-profits.

"We're hoping to actually break the 6 figure mark, so would like to raise $100,000 net, after we pay all of our expenses. We've been so close in previous years, earning between 90 and 90,000. This year, we really want  to get over that 6 figure mark," Masengale said.

The festival is this Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets are $6 at the door and children under the age of 2 get in free.

You can also purchase tickets in advance from Lions Club Members who will be in front of local United Supermarkets selling tickets for $5.
