YCSO: Woman steals 88 gold coins from ex, buys vehicles

Posted: Updated:

Authorities in Yavapai County say they've arrested a 59-year-old woman they believe stole 88 gold coins, worth more than $100,000, from her ex-boyfriend.

Deputies said the 84-year-old victim said he discovered the coins were missing on Feb. 11 and had been kept in a safe for which he thought his ex may have gotten the combination.

The victim said Cheryl Clement had moved out of his Dewey home in August of 2013 and knew when he would be out of town. He also said Clement's daughter contacted him believing her mother had the coins.

The Criminal Investigations Bureau learned that starting in August, Clement bought several vehicles from a car salesman she was dating and paid in gold coins.

Several of Clement's friends had also reported receiving gold coins from her, which they cashed out to make some purchases of their own, including a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

YCSO said some of the coins were traced to gold and coin shops in the Prescott area, but only three coins have been recovered as of Wednesday.

Prescott police had Clement in custody in an unrelated case, and YCSO filed new charges including burglary, theft and five counts of trafficking in stolen property.

Bond was set at $150,000.

Clement denies any wrongdoing.

If anyone has additional information on the stolen coins, please contact Detective Dave Zavos at 928-771-3260 or Yavapai Silent Witness at 1800-932-3232 and refer to case number 14-005307.
