IRS issues 'dirty dozen' of top scams

As tax deadlines creep up, the IRS issues its annual "Dirty Dozen" list of scams.

Here are some of the top ways crooks are trying to rip you off.

  • Identity theft: A thief uses a taxpayer's identity to fraudulently file a tax return and claim a refund.
  • Telephone scam: Callers are pretending to be from the IRS in hopes of stealing money or IDs.
  • Phishing: An unsolicited email or a fake website is sent that poses as a legitimate site to lure potential victims to give out personal information.
