Coroner: Missing Waynesboro woman died of natural causes

WAYNESBORO, GA (WFXG) - The missing Waynesboro woman whose body was found in the laundry room at a home over the weekend died of natural causes, according to the Burke County Coroner's Office.

Arletha Bennett, 77, was found Saturday at 1144 Herman Lodge Blvd., just a few homes down the street from where she went missing, according to the Waynesboro Police Department.

The coroner's office said the cause of death was senility with Alzheimer's and probable hypothermia.

Bennett had been missing since Jan. 16. Her family said she walked out of her home in the middle of the night.

GBI, the Waynesboro Police Department and the Burke County Sheriff's Office combed the scene after the body was found. Neighbors couldn't believe what happened.

"She was a very well-known, nice person," said one of her neighbors. "I've been on living here for 32 years and we never had stuff like this happen in our end of the town on Quaker Road, now Herman Lodge Boulevard. It was very, very, distraught to me."

Investigators aren't releasing any details about Bennett's cause of death.
