MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Stitch by stitch Joan Fornwalt is needling together a burial outfit.

"I think I was called. I read it in the paper and it meant something to me," Fornwalt said.

That was 16 years ago and Joan Fornwalt has lost count of the number of baby clothes she's made for infants who've passed away.

This widow also makes outfits and caps for sick babies desperately trying to hang on as well as for infants alive and well and about to be baptized.

Fornwalt calls them her "little angels." The fabric is donated by the community.

"We make many of them. We pack them up and take to Montgomery to Frazer. They have a group that packs them and takes them to three hospitals in the area," Fornwalt said.

Threads of Love got its start 21 years ago in Baton Rouge, LA. Today, there are scores of chapters across the country.

Joan Fornwalt doesn't just go through the motion of sewing.

"I think about the family and what they're going through. I'm thinking about someone else besides myself. We do them as best we can and make little wraps. It's something to make the baby look good in the casket," Fornwalt said.

Fornwalt has never met any of the parents who've lost their babies. She prefers to keep it that way.

"I wouldn't want to know because it would eat me alive if I had to share their grief. That would be difficult," she said.

But chances are those families did recognize quality, the hands that made their baby's burial clothes -- hands that cared.
