Columbia Co. opens shelter from cold for residents without power

Columbia County is opening a shelter for residents without power.

Patriot's Park at 5445 Columbia Road in Grovetown will open at 10 p.m. as a public shelter, said EMA Director Pam Tucker.

Power outages are being reported all over the county, Tucker said. Some citizens need power for medical equipment and many others need shelter from the cold.

The Red Cross, DFCS, the health department and the recreation department are assisting with the shelter.

Anyone without power who would like to go to the shelter and needs transportation can call 311 or 706-868-3375 and provide your name, address and telephone number so that we can coordinate transportation for you. The National Guard is assisting with transportation.

The Columbia County Government Center lost power at 8:15 p.m. tonight and the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is operating on generator as of 9 p.m.
