Richmond Co. opening new shelter after first one loses power

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Augusta officials are opening a new shelter after the one they opened Wednesday night lost power.

The new shelter will open at noon at 2920 Mike Padgett Highway.

Officials opened the first shelter at May Park Community Center, but lost power. About 80 percent of Richmond County is without power.

The shelter volunteer staff and the three residents that checked in last night will be provided transportation to the new shelter.

Families are asked to bring pillows and blankets and any items they may need for the night, including infant supplies and extra snacks for dietary needs. One bag per person with personal items is allowed. Pets, weapons and alcohol are not allowed at the shelter.

The American Red Cross is operating the shelter with the help of the Richmond County Department of Family and Children Services.
