ELMORE CO., AL (WSFA) -

The Alabama State Board of Education is issuing a response on pending investigations and teaching certificate revocations of a former Stanhope Elmore Coach, who was indicted on sex charges.

Former Stanhope Elmore Coach Jeffrey Stanton is indicted on one count of having sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old student.

The ALSDE issued this response about current investigations after the trial was continued to January 26, 2015.

"His criminal charge of a school employee engaging in sex with a student is still pending.  Mr. Stanton has received notice of the proposed revocation of his certificate.  However, we do not have a hearing date for our administrative case.  I expect that one will be set, if needed, following the conclusion of Mr. Stanton's criminal case.  His certificate is currently valid."

Stanton was originally charged in February with first degree rape. The Elmore County School Board terminated Stanton's employment, after the initial charged earlier this year.

Stanton's bond was set at 10 thousand dollars. His arraignment is scheduled for next Tuesday.

During the preliminary hearing, a Millbrook Police Department detective said the student was raped on Stanton's desk. The student reportedly mentioned the incident to a counselor who then contacted the Alabama Department of Human Resources.

The defense alleges the student waited about nine months to confide in someone about the alleged rape. The defense also said Stanton was in a relationship with the victim's mother for nine months.

Elmore County District Attorney Randall  Houston says juveniles are typically "late reporters" and the statute of limitations never expires for sexual assault charges.
