AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - Today is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day and the Richmond County Health Department held an event to inform people about the illness.
Earlier today several vendors from across the area came together to help people learn how they can prevent getting the virus and how they can get tested.
In the 13 counties of the CSRA over 2,100 people are living with HIV.
The Health Department, Walgreens Pharmacy, and even Earth Fare had tables at the event to help answer any questions people may have had.
Public health educator Yanza Collins says the biggest thing she hopes people took away from today was to get tested.
"It's such a stigma, people are afraid to get tested and we want people to know that there's nothing to be ashamed of, " Collins says.
