AIKEN, SC (WFXG) -

A North Augusta man pleaded guilty Monday to murdering an Aiken Public Safety officer in 2012

Joshua Jones was sentenced to life without parole for the shooting death of Cpl. Sandra Rogers, said Aiken County Solicitor J. Strom Thurmond.

Jones pleaded "guilty but mentally ill" to murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, unlawful carry of a pistol and petty larceny, Thurmond said. He will be sentenced to a maximum security prison with a mental health facility.

His psychologist diagnosed him with schizophrenia as the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Thurmond said. That incident happened six months before Jones killed Rogers.

Jones is also charged with murder in the shooting death of his pregnant girlfriend, Cayce Vice. Deputies said Jones killed Vice in Richmond County and then killed Rogers in Aiken County.

The following is a statement from the Aiken Department of Public Safety regarding the guilty plea and sentencing of Joshua Jones earlier today:

"We are grateful for the support that we received, and continue to receive, from our community. We applaud the professionalism, dedication, and hard work of the Second Judicial Circuit Solicitors Office, The State Law Enforcement Division, and all the officers and individuals involved in the investigation, arrest, detention, and prosecution of this case."
