A 39-year-old man is behind bars after Aiken County deputies say he shot and killed his aunt Saturday night in Aiken.
Michael Lynn Thompson Jr., 39, is charged with murder in the death of 71-year-old Geraldine Johnson. She was shot to death in the home the two shared at 56 Clemson Drive Saturday night.
Neighbors in Aiken told Fox 54, three people lived in the house; Thompson, Johnson and Thompson's 13-year-old son.
Neighbors said they knew Johnson as Gerry.
The Aiken County Sheriff's Office said they got to the home around 10 p.m., where witnesses said two people were fighting and someone heard two gunshots go off.
Deputies found Johnson dead in the back bedroom. Thompson was taken into custody.
Thompson told neighbors Johnson wasn't in good health, so he was living there to take care of her. They also said the two had argued in the past.
"He has a 13-year-old son and I have a 9-year-old son. They would play football on the street," neighbor Carl Zotter said. "I really never had any reason to believe he'd take it to this extreme."
