The weekend is typically when gas prices are the lowest in the week, according to an analysis by GasBuddy.
The analysis showed 65 percent of states saw lower prices during the weekend, including Friday, Saturday and Sunday, than the week. Data show that few states saw Tuesday or Wednesday as the best day to fuel up.
In Georgia, Saturday and Sunday are the best days to fuel up, according to the study. In South Carolina, fueling up during the late weekend results in the most savings.
"Surprisingly, many states see the lowest gasoline prices for the week during the weekend, which may come as a surprise to many motorists," said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy.com, in a statement.
Data was tracked over the last four years. The analysis shows a wide variation of the cheapest day to get gas, but not every day was well-represented, according to the GasBuddy news release.
GasBuddy's analysis concludes that getting gas late in the week or on the weekend can result in the best savings for most drivers.
But few states saw consistency year-to-year in the day that featured the best prices. Only Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, and South Dakota saw the lowest prices on the same day for three out of the four years the study reviewed.
