CLAY COUNTY, MO (KCTV) -

The mother of a 19-month-old has been charged with murder after the little girl drowned in a pond while under her watch.

A Clay County grand jury indicted Amberlyn Farrow for second-degree murder and first-degree child endangerment.

Farrow was taken into custody Tuesday evening without incident. She is currently in the Clay County Detention Center awaiting arraignment. Her bond was set at $500,000.

Evidence in the case led to the grand jury indictment. Because it was a grand jury indictment rather than charges by a prosecutor, few details were available on what led to the murder charge.

Sheriff's deputies and investigators were called to a home in Holt on Oct. 16 to investigate the death of a child that had appeared to have drowned in a pond on the rural Clay County property.

A farm property, just beyond a hill off of Shanks Road, is where the child's father brought his daughter to spend time with her mother. That day was the last time Joshua Crawford saw his daughter, Josslyn Crawford.

Crawford said he broke up with Farrow in August, and Josslyn lived with him without any legal custody arrangements most of the time.

Crawford said Farrow hadn't seen her daughter in a month, so he let her go out to the farm to see her mother.

Crawford said the farm is where Farrow lives with her brother. He told Farrow that Josslyn could stay with her for two weeks.

Joshua Crawford has filed a wrongful death civil case against the mother of his two daughters along with her mother, brother and sister-in-law.

The baby's paternal grandmother, Brenda Lung, said her son is devastated.

"It's tearing him up. He can barely get through a day not calling me or his stepdad crying," she said. "He says he doesn't know if he can go on but he's going on because he has to."

Farrow was arrested just a few days after giving birth to the couple's second daughter. There is now a custody battle being waged over that child.

Lung said she, her son and others in the family are relieved that charges have been filed against Farrow.

"It's about time," Lung said. "Finally there's justice for my granddaughter."

She believes that Farrow fell asleep on the dock and her inattentiveness allowed Josslyn to fall off the dock into the water.

Farrow faces two to 30 years in prison along with fines if convicted.
