WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Slightly milder temperatures will dominate early in the week before another Arctic front moves through by Tuesday. This morning ILM recorded a record low of 14 before highs returned to 50 this afternoon. It looks like we may have a shot at snow late Tuesday into Wednesday. Details are not clear at this point so stay tuned.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Expect mostly clear and chilly conditions with lows in the upper 20's. Wind chills may dip to around 20 with a southwest breeze around 8-15 miles per hour.
SUNDAY: A reinforcing shot of cool and dry air will keep skies mostly sunny and afternoon highs near 50. Sunday night will be a bit milder thanks to southerly breezes. Look for partly cloudy skies and lows in the upper 30's.
MONDAY: Arctic cold briefly retreats and we'll actually see a mild day! Skies will be partly sunny with highs surging into the low 60's. Clouds increase Monday night in advance of the next Arctic cold front. Lows will be in the low 30's.
TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY: An exciting but tricky forecast. We know it will be very cold as all computer point to another Arctic invasion. Highs both days will struggle to reach the mid 30's with lows near 20. This means any precipitation should most likely be in the form of snow.
Most models point to a low developing off the South Carolina coast late Tuesday. The trick will be how strong the low gets and the track it ultimately takes. Some models have a weak low tracking fairly far from the coast. This scenario leads to little or no snow for southeast NC.
Other models suggest a stronger low tracking closer to the coast. With the area in the grips of an Arctic airmass that would likely mean a significant accumulation of snow for southeast NC with the highest amounts near the coast.
It is too early to think about snowfall forecasts. In fact we still aren't sure which of the above sceneries will play out. One thing is for sure. Stay with WECT for the latest weather information! THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY: Arctic high pressure builds in and skies will become mostly to partly sunny on Thursday. Highs will struggle to reach 40. Arctic cold rapidly retreats Thursday night through Saturday. Clouds and temperatures increase on Friday and Saturday. Highs Friday reach the upper 50's with low 60's likely Saturday. Lows moderate back into the 30's. There is a small shower chance on Saturday.
