The South Carolina Forestry Commission is issuing a Red Flag Fire Alert for the entire state starting Saturday until further notice.
The alert does not outlaw debris burning in most unincorporated areas, but does strongly encourage South Carolinians to postpone burning.
Weather conditions this weekend, which are forecasted to include sustained winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour, wind gusts of 30 to 40 miles per hour and low relative humidity, contribute to an elevated fire danger level, forestry officials said.
Some local ordinances do ban burning during a Red Flag Fire Alert. Residents should check with local officials before burning this weekend to see how the alert affects their communities.
Forestry officials will monitor weather conditions this weekend and evaluate the situation. The alert remains in effect until lifted by the S.C. Forestry Commission.
