WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Wilmington Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its K9 officers, better known as Arko.

Arko, 11, was a nine year veteran on the force. He began his service for the department in 2005, and was set to retire in February.  He was euthanized last Friday due to a medical condition that was only recently discovered.

Arko and his handler, Officer Kirti Vithalani, were behind a number of drug busts and numerous arrests.

Saddened Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous, spoke on the importance of canine use in the police department, "K9s are a vital part of our law enforcement family," Evangelous said. "We will miss Arko and offer our thoughts and prayers to Officer Vithalani and his family".
