(WMC-TV) – ANDY, WILL IT WORK? Shark Steam & Spray Mop = WISE BUY!

The power of steam to get floors clean!

That's what gives the $120-$150 Shark steam and spray mop its bite.

Its three settings use just water and a "steam-energized cleanser" – biodegradable and environmentally safe – to clean hardwood, tile, vinyl, any floor that's not carpet. No chemicals.

We tested it with Jack McKee at his Memphis Flooring Company, 5653 Shelby Dr. in Southeast Memphis. We started with an untreated cleaning on the ceramic tile in the store's break room. The floor was pocked with years of daily wear-and-tear stains.

McKee cleaned one side of the tile with a top-selling chemical mop. I used the Shark, with one of its disposable ‘sani-pads' attached, to clean the other side. The Shark was set to its steam "mop" setting.

"That side (the Shark steam & spray mop side) looks, to me, a little bit cleaner than this side," McKee observed.

Next, we made a controlled instant coffee spill on both sides of a vinyl floor. We used paper towels to absorb the large amounts of liquid, then fired up a hair dryer to dry what remained into a heavy, set-in stain.

For the coffee stain, I attached the Shark's microfiber cloth to it and set the steam setting to "scrub."  The Shark cut a squeaky-clean swath through the coffee stain, while the chemical mop left behind a light-brown shade on the vinyl.

When we smeared grape jelly and honey on both sides of the vinyl, both mops appeared to cut through the gunk equally well.  But as I inspected the vinyl, I noticed the chemical mop left behind a sticky residue. The Shark, despite one seriously gummy mess, sliced right through it, leaving only a little moisture from its steam.

"It really works," said McKee. "It's certainly environmentally friendly. I would definitely say it is a WISE BUY."

Cordova's Jessica White wrote a glowing review of the Shark steam & spray mop on her bargain-shopping site MyMemphisMommy.com. "It's easy for quick-to-go mom's, you know, with little ones," White said. "I have a 2-year-old potty training. I can sanitize with the steam and go pretty quick."

McKee said you should be careful, however, using the Shark on hardwood. He said its steam could make hardwood buckle.

"If you put too much steam on wood, it will make it expand and contract," he warned.

Good thing the Shark also has a no-steam setting, in which users can simply squirt the environmentally safe cleanser on hardwood and let the Shark's sani-pads collect the dirt.
