Thousands brave record-breaking cold without power

Residents glad to have power back on

GROVETOWN, GA (WFXG) - Power is being restored for the thousands of CSRA residents who were in the dark Monday night and Tuesday.

An outage in the Grovetown area has been cleared, said Georgia Power spokeswoman Carol Boatwright.

Extreme cold coupled with heavy usage took a toll on the equipment and caused outages starting around 6:30 p.m. Monday, officials with the company said.

As temperatures plummeted Monday night, Georgia Power was reporting more than 2,000 customers without power in the Grovetown area at one point.

Viewers commented on our Facebook page, indicating subdivisions such as Canterbury Farms and Euchee Creek experienced "flickering" power all evening and into the overnight hours.

Tuesday morning, more than 1,500 people in the Grovetown were still without power near William Few Parkway and Chamblin Road.

SCE&G was reporting more than 3,000 people were without power in Aiken County Tuesday morning. Power in those areas also has been restored.
