Project WARM wraps up in North Augusta

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC (WFXG) -

A cold day didn't stop ‘Project Warm' on Saturday. Volunteers from Grace United Methodist in North  Augusta were helping a woman in need, who had been waiting for a hand at home.

Grace United Methodist Church Senior Pastor Jim Dennis said, "We're having to replace rotted wood and there's termite damage. We're replacing drywall and wood on the inside."

‘Project Warm' stands for ‘Weatherization and Repair Ministry.' The woman whose house was being repaired didn't want to be identified, but has been patiently waiting for years. GUMC said the house was livable, but barley; things were falling apart.

Co-project coordinator Buff Waters said, "A couple of areas inside the house were leaking air and some of the windows wouldn't close."

Waters said the woman would shut herself into one room and turn on a heater to stay warm, but there were so many holes were in the house, that walking out of the room was like walking out the front door.

Waters said, "She had five holes in the house that were letting air escape. It's almost like living outside."

But now that's a thing of the past and the work won't cost her anything. The church provided the labor and some of the money to make the repairs. The rest was funded by Aiken United Way.

Waters said, "If you were to go out and hire someone to do the work we're doing, it would be upwards of 10 thousand dollars."
