GDOT taking applications for gateway grants, Columbia County could apply

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

The Georgia DOT said they're now taking applications for Gateway Grants, money that could help landscape areas along the state route. Officials in Columbia County are set to discuss getting on board.

Steve Exley, GDOT Engineering Manager said, "A few in the county are going to talk about potential locations that would be a good place to have the landscape installation. We'll shortlist three places and try to get with a commissioner, whichever district they're in, and see if they're for it."

Exley said no set plans for where the changes could come are in the works yet. Still, if the project is a go, GDOT will come up with 50 thousand dollars of funding.

Exley said, "50 thousand covers just plant material and construction or installation. It does only pay 10 percent toward irrigation, so the county would have to pay for an irrigation system and Maintenance ."

Exley said officials are set to meet Monday, January 6th to discuss the issue. The deadline for GDOT Gateway Grant Applications is February 28th, 2014.
