Road closed in Greenwood County after heavy rains

GREENWOOD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Cobb Road, near the Mathis Road intersection in Greenwood County, has collapsed, according to the sheriff's department.

Capt. Jimmy Boggs said that the gravel and sediment that surrounded the culvert pipe under the road were washed away by last week's heavy rainfall. He said that's when the road above it collapsed around 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Boggs said that both lanes of the two-lane street are closed for the next few days before the Department of Transportation can come to reinforce the road.

The area is heavily trafficked since it's so close to Walmart, Boggs said, but those drivers will need to find detours until further notice.
