(WMC-TV) - When it comes time to say so long to this year's live Christmas tree, just think of all the fish.

The US Army Corps of Engineers in the Little Rock District will sink bundles of donated trees into Greers Ferry Lake to create a fish habitat.

Not only do the trees serve as a woody cover but they also provide food, specifically algae, inside the evergreen's needles and branches for smaller fish, according to a fisheries management biologist.

The tree tops are visible for nearly six weeks before the trees become completely waterlogged and fully submerged, which gives anglers until the early spring to locate potential fishing hotspots.

Only live trees will be accepted, and, apparently, aquatic life is not a fan of tinsel—so please remove the shiny. Click here for more information about drop-off.

If Little Rock is too far of a drive for you to drop-off your holiday greenery, fret not. Just like the past 15 years, Shelby County continues to operate their recycling center for Christmas trees this holiday season.

Recycling at the Showplace Arena will save many Memphians the disposing cost of their trees, and it will help eliminate the creation of seasonal illegal dump sites for trees. Also, the City of Memphis chips the trees to be used as mulch, which will be available to residents next spring and fall during Earth Day.

"All trees that are recycled are diverted from the landfill which is a one of the goals for sustainable Shelby [County]," said Director of Shelby County Public Works Tom Needham.

Shelby County Public Works tonnage hit a high record of 75 tons, or 150,000 pounds, in 2002 during the holiday recycling center.

The center will remain open through January 10 in the south parking lot of the Showplace Arena, 105 South Germantown Road. Similar to the fish habitat, all discarded trees and greenery must be free of lights and other decorations.
