Underage DUI charged to driver in Christmas night wreck, passenger to hospital

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

A one car collision on Christmas night lead to the arrest of a driver on Hilton Head Island, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Matt Zitello, 19, was driving east on Dolphin Head Road on Hilton Head Island Plantation just after 11 p.m. when his vehicle went through a traffic circle, became airborne and struck a tree, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Bob Beres.

Zitello was transported to a local hospital and charged with felony DUI involving great bodily injury to the passenger. Vianery Garcia, 19, was transported in critical condition to Memorial University Medical Center. 

Both Zitello and passenger Garcia were wearing seat belts at the time of the wreck, according to Beres.

Zitello is being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center on $100,000 bond, according to the Center's online registry.

Blood work on Zitello has been sent to SLED to get his BAC, which is a requirement any time a driver is charged with Felony DUI.

According to Memorial University Medical Center, Garcia has been listed in critical condition.
