Charges against a 20-year-old man accused of hitting an 8-year-old boy with his van earlier this month were upgraded after the boy died in the hospital Thursday, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.
Scott William Hancock, 20, is now charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, deputies said.
The boy, who was a student at Sue Reynolds Elementary, was trying to board a school bus that was stopped on the eastbound side of Wrightsboro Road near Belair Road at about 7:11 a.m. on Dec. 9, deputies said. He had to cross the westbound lanes to board.
The bus had its flashing lights on, deputies said. Hancock, who was driving a Chrysler Town and Country van westbound on Wrightsboro Road, failed to stop for the caution equipment and struck the boy.
He was originally booked at the Richmond County Jail on charges of failure to stop for a school bus while loading and unloading, serious injury by vehicle and reckless driving. He is still being held there.
