Toddler dies in parent's arms after TV falls on top of him

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

We now know the name of the 2-year-old who died on Dec. 23 at the Midtown Medical Center. Camryn Lawrence was crushed by a television that fell on him inside his home on Knox St. in the Oakland Park neighborhood of Columbus. Detectives questioned his uncle in the front yard who appeared visibly distressed. Shivon Wilson heard the commotion and screaming while driving home. She stopped to help.

"There was blood all over the place, everywhere from his head, his mouth, just a lot of blood."

Wilson is a former nurse who instructed the family members how to do CPR. She describes what she saw in the moments before the ambulance arrived.

"As I got right here, the young man was screaming for help and saying the baby's not moving. So I got out of the car and ran up there. I saw a lot of blood. They were cradling the baby and praying, asking God to please help."

Detectives stayed at the address for hours after the baby was taken to the hospital, examining the scene inside the house, and questioning everyone involved. Wilson was told by a witness that the large television fell on the toddler because several other children were running around and playing too roughly. Based on the appearance of his injuries, Wilson guesses that the television fell directly on top of the child's head. She says it's an accident that could happen in the home of any family with small children.

"Because kids do horseplay, and you have to be careful when they're around televisions, when they are that size and that weight."

If you have small children, experts suggest taking another look around your house to make sure it is child-proof, especially if you have large objects, like older television sets, that are not secured and sitting at a level above the floor.

The toddler's family did not have life insurance and have opened a donation account to assist with Camryn's funeral and burial costs. The account is named Camryn Lawrence Donation Account. Anyone who wishes to donate can do so at any Wells Fargo Bank.
