AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

A Hephzibah teen who said he was beaten by a Richmond County deputy is getting a $55,000 settlement from the city of Augusta.

Kyvan James and his mother Kenya sued the city after the sheriff's office fired Deputy Brian McDuffie for using excessive force.

Kyvan said McDuffie beat him with a flashlight in August when he ran from deputies in his neighborhood. Just days later, the sheriff's office determined that McDuffie used excessive force and fired him.

Kenya James said she is saving the settlement money to help pay for Kyvan to attend college.
