Steve Spurrier makes the season brighter for returning soldiers

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

University of South Carolina Head Football Coach Steve Spurrier made the day of a few of South Carolina's bravest who were returning home from a recent deployment.

The Head Ball Coach posed for a picture with the soldiers and their family members on Wednesday at the Columbia Airport.

The soldiers had just returned from a 6-month deployment to Qatar in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

It wasn't necessarily Spurrier's action of simply standing with the group for a picture that impressed Christie Webb the most.

"My husband and some of his fellow soldiers were on their return flight from their recent deployment," said Webb. "After being delayed for six days due to maintenance and weather issues they were almost home. While sitting in the Atlanta airport they saw a face that is easily recognized by any Gamecock fan, Steve Spurrier."

The group spoke with Spurrier and asked for a picture with him. Because the plane to Columbia was boarding, he said he might join them for a photo after they landed.

"Once they reached Columbia the soldiers were focused on their families that they had not seen in 6 months," said Webb. "After the reunion the families went to the baggage claim area to retrieve their luggage. While standing there Mr. Spurrier approached the families and asked who had the camera. The soldiers and their families were very excited about being able to meet and take a picture with Mr. Spurrier. It really made their day."

Webb says she's very impressed with the coach's actions and wants to say thanks. "I want to tell Mr. Spurrier thank you for taking the time out of his busy schedule to stop and acknowledge the soldiers!"
