AAA offers free rides for intoxicated drivers during holidays

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - Drivers who have too much to drink this holiday season can get a free, safe ride home.

AAA and Bud Light are partnering to offer the Tow to Go program. Between Dec. 20 and Jan. 1, intoxicated drivers can call an AAA tow truck to take them and their vehicles to a safe location within a 10-mile radius.

Drivers don't have to be AAA members to get the free ride.

"Around Christmas and New Year's Eve, calls for Tow to Go have historically spiked," said Gerry Gutowski, Sr. Vice President, Automotive Services, The Auto Club Group. "AAA has always played a critical role each holiday weekend by protecting motorists on our roadways, however, it is everyone's responsibility to make good decisions and always choose a designated driver if you have been drinking."

While choosing a designated driver is the preferred option, only 36 percent of alcohol consumers always use one after drinking, according to an AAA Consumer Pulse survey. One in five consumers report rarely or never using one.

The Tow to Go service is designed to be used as a last resort, organizers said. Since its inception in 1998, the service has safely removed more than 22,000 intoxicated drivers from the roads.

Tow to Go is available in 11 states, including Georgia. The program is not available in South Carolina. To use the Tow to Go program, call (855) 2-TOW-2-GO or (855) 286-9246.
