Bon Secours has announced that the Westhampton School will be renovated for use for the Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing and the St. Mary's School of Medical Imaging.
The announcement came during a press conference Thursday for the property at 5800 Patterson Ave., that is involved in the deal to bring the Redskins training camp to the city.
Bon Secours Virginia Health Systems CEO Peter Bernard estimates the building to be complete in 36 months.
"Our goal has always been to preserve the integrity of the school, and to be able keep the continuity of education inside its walls is tremendous," said Bernard.
For neighbors that have been anxiously waiting for the announcement, this was good news.
"I think we were on pins and needles wondering what would it be?" said Caroline Smith. "Would it be a ten story high office complex and a parking garage and a parking complex? You know, so there was some concern for some of us."
But Smith is thrilled by the announcement, because she says it will maintain the look and feel of the neighborhood.
"It sounds like keeping this a school for the nurses would be in keeping with that," said Smith. "That it would bring students in who are going to want to shop and eat in the restaurant. And that they would be good neighbors to us."
"We feel that Bon Secours St. Mary's stepped up to the plate with this and came up with a really wonderful and viable solution," added Nadja Gutowski .
