Meeting raises questions about possible Boeing move

Posted: Updated:
HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Just days after Alabama submitted its proposal to bring a new Boeing plant to Huntsville, new details have emerged that put the possible move into question.

On Wednesday, Boeing Commercial Airplanes Chief Ray Conner and Tom Wroblewski, Machinist district 751 president, met at Boeing headquarters in Renton, Washington. This is the first time the two sides have gotten together since the machinist union there rejected Boeing's eight-year contract extension offer. It was that move that lead the jet manufacturing company to look elsewhere, like Alabama, for their 777X plant.

What happened inside of the three-hour long meeting is unclear, but its reported that Boeing still has some major concerns about the cost of continuing to do business in Washington state, specifically with employee pensions.

The machinist union said their goal, at this point, is to see what they can do to secure the 777X wing fabrication and final assembly plant for themselves.

Bryan Corliss, a union spokesman, said the meeting "was kind of an informal conversation and kind of a clear the air kind of meeting and it went fairly well."

Boeing has already scheduled another meeting to speak with union representatives on Thursday afternoon.
