A Columbia County couple is facing child cruelty charges after a 10-year-old boy showed up at school with bloody bruises on his body, according to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.
Wilford Petersen, 57, and the boy's mother, Shavoya Davis, 25, were arrested Wednesday after the boy showed up at Euchee Creek Elementary School with the bruises, Capt. Steve Morris said.
The boy told a teacher that Petersen beat him with an electrical cord for not bringing his homework home, Morris said. The boy was taken to a local emergency room for treatment.
The boy had cuts to his arms, legs, back and buttocks, according to the sheriff's office. Some of the lacerations were healing over, but others appeared more recent.
The boy's mother watched Petersen beat her son, according to the sheriff's department. Petersen and Davis are each charged with cruelty to children.
Peterson is also charged with possession of marijuana after deputies said they found marijuana in the house.
The boy was taken from the couple and turned over to the Department of Family and Children Services.
