SCDOT to hold public meeting on Hitchcock Parkway widening

AIKEN, SC (WFXG) -

The South Carolina Department of Transportation will present revised plans for the widening of Hitchcock Parkway in Aiken Thursday during a public information meeting.

The meeting is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, located at 961 Trail Ridge Rd.

The $26.5 million project would widen Hitchcock Parkway to four lanes between U.S. 1 and Silver Bluff Road.

When SCDOT presented the original plans for the widening a year ago, Aiken residents were concerned that the project did not stay within the existing right-of-way and did not maintain the "parkway look," Aiken city officials said. But officials said the revised plan takes those concerns into account.

The existing right-of-way is 100 feet, and the proposed pavement width is 88 feet.

City of Aiken and SCDOT officials say that when the road was originally built in the 1970s, it was made to handle 16,000 cars per day, but now handles between 17,000 and 19,000 each day.
