Family questions search for missing loved one

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Robert Mahurin has spent the last two months wondering what happened to his brother Terry. The last time he saw Terry was Oct. 2.

"Yea, that's the only brother I had, and he had a bad drug habit. I have to admit that," Robert said.

Terry, who Robert says battled a heroin addiction, still made time to call his brother everyday and meet for dinner weekly. In fact, Terry was supposed to attend a birthday dinner shortly before the last time Robert saw him.

"He never called or anything for a couple weeks," Robert added.

Tuesday, Maricopa County Sheriff's officials confirmed they found Terry's body on the Salt River Indian reservation.

"The body was found Thanksgiving Day, a quarter mile from the truck," Dep. Joaquin Enriquez explained.

Robert reported his brother missing on Oct. 15. His truck was found on the reservation a month later, on Nov. 15. And still, after two exhaustive searches by MCSO and the Salt River reservation police, Terry's body wasn't found until 13 days later.

"Why they didn't find it earlier, cause they searched the area," Robert asked.

But Enriquez says, "We searched exactly where we needed to search. We went out in helicopters. We took out dogs. We did the search," Enriquez explained.

But the area where Terry's body was found is hard to navigate Enriquez says.

"There's brush everywhere...very hard terrain to get to."

Investigators still don't know how Terry died, but they're sure of one thing.

"At this point there are no signs, whatsoever, of foul play," Enriquez said.

The medical examiner ruled Terry Mahurin's death inconclusive. The results of a toxicology report won't be back for 2 weeks.
