Many flights delayed, canceled on year's busiest travel day

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – On this busiest travel day of the year, Alex Holley reported live at Myrtle Beach International Airport, and is watching closely for any delays and cancellations. Check the links below for information on your flights.

Due to yesterday's severe weather across the eastern United States, many airlines are offering waivers and compensation for flight issues. This is big because the rescheduling fees normally cost up to $200, so it can save travelers the money and the headache. Myrtle Beach International Airport officials say this is a traveling situation where travelers want to stay on top of their flight status.

"You want to call in ahead of time, work with your airlines, check to see if there's any kind of weather delays," explained Courtenay Leopard, with MYR. "If there's any, they'll work with you and you can schedule another flight. But please contact the airlines."

For more details on which airlines are providing waivers, and for which flights, check here:

It's always a good idea to check the status of your flight before you fly out.

You can check the status of your departing flight from MYR online here:

Arriving flight status at MYR can be seen here:

FlightAware.com, a website that tracks airline traffic, unveiled its "misery map." Hub airports like Chicago's O'Hare, Denver and DC showed the most red for misery on the map Monday– after 600 flights were canceled.

Flightcaster.com predicts flight delays, sometimes hours before airlines figure it out.

Nextflight.com lists upcoming flights in case yours gets canceled, and there are apps  like Flightstats or Flighttrack pro which track your flight in real time.
