PHOENIX (CBS5) -

St. Mary's Food Bank began its annual food distribution for Thanksgiving on Monday morning and with the cars lined up early, it's clear demand is as great as ever.

"You hear about the economy improving, home values going up, but it's going to take a long time for the folks who really need this to trickle down to them," St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance spokesman Jerry Brown said.

The food bank expected to hand out food for a Thanksgiving meal to 1,500 families Monday alone.

They have two days left to go but they're in serious need of turkeys.

There are about 3,500 turkeys short of their goal so some families may have to go without the Thanksgiving fixings.

"We'll send somebody home with something. We'll put something on people's plates for Thanksgiving. You always want to make it the turkey. It's that comfort food, it's a holiday tradition. We'd love to send everybody home with a turkey and hopefully we'll still get there," Brown said.

They blame the bad weather the past few days for the drop-off in donations.

You can still help Valley families and donate through Wednesday - click here for details.
