TRENTON, SC (WFXG) -

The pilot of a small, private plane died Monday night after the plane crashed in Edgefield County, officials said.

The pilot was 56-year-old Richard Showalter of Graniteville, according to the Edgefield County Coroner's Office. An autopsy will be performed Tuesday in Newberry.

The twin-engine plane went down near the Twin Lakes Airport off Bettis Academy Road in Trenton, according to officials. The plane was discovered near Rachel Avenue.

The initial emergency calls were routed through Aiken County some time between 6 and 6:30 p.m. Officials haven't said why the plane was in the area.

Witnesses told EMA that the plane appeared to have engine trouble, before nosediving into a wooded area.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
