Calls of leaky roofs after weekend storm pour in

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A weekend of rain and wind did a number on the valley and a Valley roofing company said they have been inundated with calls for leaky roofs.

"Friday was absolutely insane," said Valorie Brown-Miller with Jim Brown & Sons Roofing said the most common cause of roof leaks is poor maintenance.

"Ninety percent of your leaks are caused by pipe protrusions," Brown-Miller said.

She also said tree debris can pile up, weighing down the roof.

"Just have somebody come up, take a look at it, look at all your protrusions, valleys, clean off any debris," Brown-Miller said.

Valorie said an annual roof maintenance job would cost around $300 - but it's better than a roof repair bill that would be in the thousands.

If you do have a leaky roof, beware of the crooks and con artists out there.

"Storm chasing, that's a big business, and the folks that participate in that know that," said Felicia Thompson with the Better Business Bureau of Arizona. "They follow weather reports, they know what's happening."

Thompson said after 2010's big hail storm, complaints of so-called "storm chasers," or scammers posing as contractors, skyrocketed. She recommends going to their website or the state registrar of contractors before hiring someone.

"You have to do your homework," Thompson said.
