Egg Bowl Update & the Conerly Trophy finalists

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The annual Egg Bowl game takes the spotlight Thanksgiving night at 6:30 in Starkville sending the 7 and 4 Ole Miss Rebels against the 5 and 6 Mississippi State Bulldogs.

If Mississippi State is to gain a trip into the post-season, the Bulldogs need a win over the Rebels.

The task of beating Ole Miss has been made more difficult with a cloud hanging over the quarterbacks at Mississippi State.  At Monday's news conference MSU head coach Dan Mullen said that Tyler Russell will be day-to-day.  He re-injured his shoulder in the overtime win against Arkansas on Saturday.

Sophomore quarterback Dak Prescott won't be ready for the Egg Bowl game and Mullen said Prescott should be ready to play for the bowl game.  He's apparently confident his Bulldogs will beat the Rebels on Thursday.

True freshman Damian Williams who saw action in the win over the Razorbacks and scored the winning touchdown in overtime on a beautiful 25 yard gallop will see plenty of action Thanksgiving night.  Williams led Archbishop Rummel High to an undefeated season last year as the Raiders captured the 5A State Championship, the largest classification in Louisiana.

Ole Miss watched a winning streak end at four games Saturday.  Missouri beat the Rebels 24-10 and ousted Ole Miss from the national rankings.

On a positive note for Mississippi State, the home team has won eight of the last nine Egg Bowls.

There is no point spread on the Egg Bowl game due to questions surrounding the Bulldogs quarterbacks.

Earlier today the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame announced 10 finalists for the C Spire Conerly Trophy that will be awarded December 3 at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Jackson.

Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace could become the first player to win the Conerly Trophy in consecutive years.   Mississippi State offensive guard Gabe Jackson could become the first offensive lineman to claim the honor.

Other finalists include Alcorn State running back Arnold Walker, Millsaps running back Mike Barthelemy, Jackson State quarterback Clayton Moore, Mississippi College quarterback Jonathan Reed, Belhaven offensive lineman Matt Hall, Delta State wide receiver Ricky Hunt, Southern Miss defensive tackle Khyri Thornton and Mississippi Valley State cornerback Avery Boykin.

Eli Manning won the Conerly Trophy as a sophomore and as a senior.

Fan voting will account for 10 percent of the vote and 90 percent will come from the statewide panel of media.

Fan voting officially begins November 26 at 8 a.m. and will conclude December 2 at 8 a.m. Fans will vote for a first-place, second-place and third-place winner, just like the media.
