'Cook off' kicks off Red Kettle season

Cook off starts Red Kettle season in Aiken

AIKEN, SC (WFXG) - Clarke Mccants is the reigning champ of the Aiken Salvation Army Cook Off. In 2012, his food won first prize. But while Mccants was back this year for more competition, he wanted to fill more than empty stomachs.

Mccants said,"We encourage people to come and test our dishes and then encourage them to make a contribution."

Chefs, like Mccants, were competing Saturday for the Salvation Army Red Kettle drive. They whipped up special dishes like chili, stew and macaroni and cheese, all hoping everyone who would visited their booths would give back.

Major Angela Repass with the Salvation Army of Aiken said, "The money in the kettles is used to fund things like our homeless shelter, our boys and girls club and our social services program."

Mccants said he was cooking knowing the programs can help out anyone, at anytime.

Mccants said,"It could be any of us this afternoon or tomorrow. You never know."
